The belief that hard work alone can lead to a better life for each succeeding generation is ingrained in the American psyche. The Center on Children and Families at Brookings and the Pew Charitable Trusts’ Economic Mobility Project held a discussion to examine the findings of "Getting Ahead or Losing Ground: Economic Mobility in America," a new volume by Brookings experts Julia Isaacs, Isabel Sawhill and Ron Haskins. They examine gender, race, immigration and families in addition to offering new findings on education, international comparisons, trends and wealth.

Isaacs, Sawhill and Haskins—along with Douglas Holtz-Eakin, policy director of John McCain 2008; Ian Solomon, legislative council for Senator Barack Obama; and Gene Sperling, senior economic advisor to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign; plus other noted experts—examined the trajectory of economic mobility of a new generation of Americans.
