Established in 1998, the Brookings Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies (CNAPS) conducts research, analysis, and exchange to enhance policy development and understanding on the pressing political, security, and economic issues facing Northeast Asia and the United States in the region.
ASIAN FELLOWS PROGRAM Each year, up to six Visiting Fellows from the region spend 10 months with the Center to conduct research, interact with the U.S. policymaking community, and actively take part in a rich array of policy seminars, roundtables, and discussions available at Brookings and elsewhere in Washington, D.C. Following a competitive application process, the Visiting Fellows are drawn from middle to senior ranks of the governments, think tanks, universities, the media, and business communities of Northeast Asia. In 2007-2008, the Center is hosting six Visiting Fellows: Keiko Iizuka from Japan; Linbo Jin from China; Shih-chung Liu from Taiwan; Sun-won Park from Korea; and Hao Zheng from Hong Kong.
PROGRAMS
The Center's active series of programs provides expert insight and analysis into current events and emerging trends in Northeast Asia, and their implications for U.S. interests there.
Activities include lectures and presentations by Asian and American opinion leaders, Visiting Fellows' presentations, briefings for members of the Washington policy and diplomatic communities, major policy seminars in both Washington and Northeast Asia, and other outreach functions.
RESEARCH Research, analysis and publications from the Center and its associated researchers help frame key debates and offer policy recommendations on issues of concern in Northeast Asia, and for U.S. foreign policy development in the region. Center research and analysis appear in the form of working papers, web-based publications, Congressional testimony, journal articles, monographs, and books. The principal areas of research and analysis for the Center include: security architecture of Northeast Asia; U.S.-China strategic relations; the dynamics of relations across the Taiwan Strait; U.S and regional relations with South and North Korea; Japan's structural rigidities; and integrating China into the world economy and the international political system.
Through the CNAPS Working Paper Series, the Visiting Fellows produce individual research papers. The Center also publishes the Brookings Northeast Asia Commentary, a series of monthly articles that assess current events and their implications
